Vote for candidates who support Clean Money/Clean Elections26 July 2008 Editor: Is out tax money being spent on our needs or on the needs of the major corporations who are major contributors to political campaigns? We are in the middle of a major campaign season and have an opportunity to elect officials in New York State who will support Clean Money/Clean Elections. Clean Money/Clean Elections provides for full public financing of elections so that the individual we elect is beholden to us not to major donors. This past year, in the New York State Assembly, a bill (A 11507 A) was passed to provide for partial funding of campaigns. Assemblyperson Gary Finch voted against this bill. He did not even support this compromise bill for partial funding. If you live in the 123rd Assembly District watch this issue closely. Ask the candidates how they stand on this issue. How else are you going to get representatives who will vote for your needs? If you live in the 51st New York State Senate District yo uhave the same chance to ask the candidates their position on election reform. A bill was introduced into the Senate (S 7715 A) to provide for full public financing of elections. Senator James Seward has shown no support for this bill. Why is this so important? Think about your rising insurance costs, the rising cost of prescription medications and medical care in general, and the cost of disposing of all those water bottles that little the highways. Think about who benefits from the current laws. Is it you or the insurance company, the pharmaceutical company or the bottling company? Think about what democracy really means - rul of, by and for the people. Let us take back our power and vote only for candidates who support Clean Money/Clean Elections. Wanda Mead Campbell
